There are two required texts for the National Aspiring Leadership programme. These are available in major book stores, online, as e-books and audiobooks. There is no particular time frame to read these in over the course of the programme.

Delegates may choose to engage with fellow participants online to discuss their thoughts on the required texts. This is optional but a good way to connect with fellow delegates, see others’ perspectives and understand how peers have implemented text ideas in their kura. Please add your reflections in the comments section below.

  1. “Dare to Lead ”
Leadership requires consistent practice and self-reflection. I like the trust-building framework acronym ‘BRAVING’ (Boundaries, Reliability, Accountability, Vault(confidentiality), Integrity, Non judgment, and Generosity) as it reflects what I have learned on my leadership journey to create a team that works together collaboratively and effectively. As a Maths teachers I am very passionate about ‘making mistakes to learn’ and this is reflected in my own learning journey where I am willing to take risks and try new things. Creating a shame-resilient culture where people can learn from their mistakes is important. Kindness goes hand in hand with honesty for me. I value honesty. I liked the book 🙂

  2. Kia ora Peter. I have looked into Brene Browns theory of Horizontal Leadership – we studied and adopted this at the last school I was at. Although (I feel) a kura can never be 100% horizontal in their leadership there are certainly aspects that worked so well. Being a small school we were treated as equals, made decisions together and the whole staff had ownership of what was happening in our kura – from the strategic plan through to calf club and class creation. I feel Brene has so much to offer me in terms of leadership ideas and guidance. I’m excited to get into this book. At the moment I am reading Legacy which is good, but I am finding it difficult to fully get immersed in.

  3. I’ve listened to the Brisk of the Brene Brown book. Emotional vulnerability and a culture of genuine empathy seen at the core of her kaupapa. I’ve read an AI generated overview of the Legacy book. Whose not a fan of the all blacks and in awe of their success. I know their leadership and team culture is highly valued and often emulated.
