Fire
What makes a fire burn
is space between the logs,
a breathing space.
Too much of a good thing,
too many logs
packed in too tight
can douse the flames
almost as surely
as a pail of water would.
So building fires
requires attention
to the spaces in between,
as much as to the wood.
When we are able to build
open spaces
in the same way
we have learned
to pile on the logs,
then we can come to see how
it is fuel, and absence of the fuel
together, that make fire possible
We only need to lay a log
lightly from time to time.
A fire
grows
simply because the space is there,
with openings
in which the flame
that knows just how it wants to burn
can find its way.

‘The space between the logs’ makes the fire burn. Lighting a fire, a passion for learning requires an environment that we, like a fire, can ‘breathe’ in. But there are times in leadership when we feel like we are in the middle of the fire and not able to stop the logs being added! Every piece of fuel needs to be accommodated without stifling the learning flame.
So where can we find the Education Sector “best logs” for an overheated environment and who is/should be breathing in the space between them to keep the flame of learning bright and finding its way? How do we make time to fully explore the excellent resource in the Ministry of Education on-line Bulletin and all associated drop down menus of pathways as well as every other challnege schools are facing, to support a positive start to next year? What this korero is (re)focusing you on is the space to explore and gather what your kura needs for next year, from networking sites such as this one:
Resources:
Ministry Bulletin for School Leaders | He Pitopito Kōrero: https://www.education.govt.nz/school/ministry-bulletin-for-school-leaders-he-pitopito-korero/
Module 16 Provocation/Task:
How well equipped are you as a fire builder? How ready at you to lead your kura to be on fire for learning next year?
The task for this korero is to go to the bulletin site at https://www.education.govt.nz/school/ministry-bulletin-for-school-leaders-he-pitopito-korero/
- Choose the pathway of most significance to you and your Kura OR the pathway you know least about OR the pathway you are familiar with and want to revisit.
- Familiarise yourself with the pathway through at least three levels of the menu and at least two supporting links.
This korero does not have to be responded to on the forum, but the work done and/or information taken and shared within your kura is designed to assist in resourcing next year’s learning journey.

Hi all, has someone worked out where to find this page on the updated site?
