Reflecting on Communication and Trust in Practice:
Consider a recent situation where effective communication significantly contributed to building or maintaining relational trust within your school, or conversely, where a communication challenge impacted trust.
Discuss with a trusted colleague the key communication strategies employed (or not employed) and their impact on the level of trust. Post a summary of your discussion and key insights on the forum (150 words maximum).

A recent situation that highlighted the connection between communication and relational trust occurred during a staff discussion about assessment deadlines. Tension had been building, and several teachers felt overwhelmed but hesitant to speak openly. I intentionally shifted my communication approach by using active listening, slowing the conversation, and inviting each person to share without interruption. This aligned with the HBR emphasis on empathetic communication and Julian Treasure’s reminder to speak with honesty and presence.
By acknowledging staff concerns transparently and clarifying the non‑negotiables with compassion, the tone of the room changed. Trust increased because staff felt heard rather than managed. My colleague and I agreed that the key strategies were listening to understand, not to respond; naming the emotion in the room; and communicating decisions with clarity and integrity. This experience reinforced how relational trust grows when communication is both strategic and deeply human.
